MK Skate has revealed this hidden history through a series of exhibitions, events, films, city trails and ultimately – a book. Starting in the 1970s, and coming right up to the present day (2020) the project looked at the impact the citys modernist architecture has had on developing pioneering UK skate talent such as Rob Selley, Sean Smith, James Bush, Zeta Rush, and now Olympic hopeful, Alex deCunha.

Starting with the radical punks in the early 1980s, through to the impact of US skate films and tours in the 1990s, and on to 2020 Olympic dreams, the MK Skate exhibition captured the personal histories of the generations of skaters, both hobbyists and sponsored, who have grown up in the city.
Between June 2019 and November 2020, working with 50 local skaters, it delivered a city centre on-street exhibition and digital trail, an exhibition in centre:mk, a talks and workshop programme, the digitisation of over 60 films, an archive programme and now the production of this new book.

MK Skate. In May 2019, MK Skate, a project exploring the history of skateboarding in Milton Keynes, was founded, going on to secure £97,800 in National Lottery Heritage Funding. To celebrate Milton Keyne’s contribution to skateboarding, MK Skate delivered a city centre trail, an exhibition shown between 27 September to 22 December 2019, and a book.
